Morabaraba is a traditional strategy board game played across Southern Africa under many names — morabaraba in Sesotho and Setswana, umlabalaba in isiZulu, Twelve Men's Morris in English. Two players place and move pieces on a board of intersecting lines, capturing an opponent's piece each time they line up three in a row — a "mill." The two boards above are the two variants played here: South Africa's Traditional Morabaraba and Lesotho's Koti.
It belongs to a family of mill games found all over the world, from shax in Somalia to tapatan in the Philippines. Read the wider story.
